Introduction
Today we are going to read a very popular style of text called a "Choose Your Own Adventure."
In these stories the reader takes on the role of the main character and is asked to make choices at certain points in the story to decide which way a story will go. You can read the book many times and change the story every time!

Start reading pages 4-5 of Alien Artefact.
Pause to answer the following:
What words does the author use when he is speaking directly to you, the reader? ("you" "You're" )
It is not written in speech marks but you can easily tell that the author is addressing you.
What parts of this text are written in speech marks? (The parts spoken out loud by your character and any other character in the story.)
Read on for about 10 minutes or so to get into the story a bit. Select someone each time to choose the direction they would like the story to go. Show the students the text whenever the author changes the style of font to emphasise the way a word should be said/read. How does this help the meaning of the story? How does this help make the story more interesting?

What do you think of this type of story? Why?
Why is this story type ok to read again and again?
When the author is writing to "you" in the story, how does it make you feel about the story or about the other characters in the story?
Are speech marks as important in this type of book? Could they be more important so that the reader can follow who is speaking?
