Our Library has a new name. It is now called the Mackillop Centre, after Australia's first saint, St Mary Mackillop. St Mary Mackillop's mission was to provide all children with the opportunity to learn and she was responsible for establishing schools all over Australia, particularly in remote areas. It is only fitting, therefore, that we name our centre of learning after such a great Australian.
Organisation
Look at the pictures above.
Where would you find these?
What do they all have in common?
Why is organisation important in all these places?
What would happen if things weren't organised?
What has been used in some of these places to help locate things more quickly and easily?
Can you think of any other areas in the home or in public where things are organised in specific ways?

Libraries and organisation
A library is one place where there needs to be a system of organisation so that resources can be found by the people using it.
It is important that everyone knows how that system works to be able to get the most out of the library. Take a look at the video to the right. These children have made an introductory video to the way their school library is organised. You can see that there are many similarities to our library. After watching the video… With your teacher list on the chart all the different types of books that can be found in our library. They all have a different place in the library so that they are able to be found. Later we are going to take a walk around our library, you may find more things to add to this list. |

Discussion
- Look at the books that are on the easel. What is different about all of them?
- Where would you find these in our library?
- Why do they belong in different sections and why are they not all shelved/housed together?
- Look at the stickers on the spine and the front of each of these books. These are called the spine labels. They tell us what collection they all belong to.
- What does JF stand for?
- What does F stand for?
- What does it mean when there are numbers and there is no F or JF?
- What does SF stand for?
- What does it mean when there is an R on the spine label?
- What do you think it means when there is a TR on the spine label?
Time for a walk
Take the mapping sheet and the instructions in a clipboard with you as you take a quiet walk around the library, visiting the various locations in our library. Fill in the blank labels on the map as you go. Remember to look for any signs that might tell you what is in each location or to look at the spine label on the books that you find there. The arrows on the map are pointing to the areas that you need to visit.
When you have completed the task, bring your sheet back to your teacher to be marked and start borrowing for this week. Once you have borrowed find a comfortable spot to read quietly.
