Before Reading
Hold the cover up to the students and ask them what they think the story will be about.
After they answer, ask them if the illustration and title helped them work this out. Read the blurb to see if that helps to further refine what the story is about. What do they mean by'one of humanity's greatest achievements'? Ask some background questions to gauge how much your class knows about the space exploration in general, and the moon landing in particular.

Read and Discuss
Read and enjoy the story. Pause to discuss where necessary.
Take some time to examine the pages at the end of the text that give a more factual account of the historic moon landing. What factual elements has Mark Greenwood cleverly wound into the story of Billy, Buzz and Mickey wanting to be astronauts? How can you tell from the illustrations that the story is set in the late 1960's? Read the notes from Mark and Terry at the end of this book. They have written about something that happened in their childhood that they will remember their whole life. Has something happened in your childhood that you will remember for the rest of your life? |
