Read Chapter 9 - The Brother
Then Discuss the following . . . .
POINTS OF VIEW |
After reading this chapter we learn that Birrung has a family of her own.
What did Birding's brother think of his sister living with the Johnson's? Why would he want her to come home? Why was Birrung upset after her brother left? How would she be feeling? What would she want to do? Why would Mr Johnson want to keep Birrung? Was it to look after Mrs Johnson like Barney thought, or were there other reasons? Were the Johnson's doing the right thing for Birrung? Were they kind or not? Were they acting with good intentions? What do you think should happen to Birrung? |
YOUR RESPONSE ??? |
How did you feel when Mr Johnson said:
"Arbaroo wanted to go with him, to live with her father, Maugoran, or with Barangaroo, the wife of Bennelong. I told her she must stay here? We must try to teach her to be civilised, to know God . . ." (p.78) Do you think Barney understands how Birrung is feeling? Look at his response when Mr Johnson said that they needed to teach the natives to be like us. "By keeping Birrung away from her pa and brother? I thought. By keeping Bennelong prisoner? It was a funny way to make friends." (p. 79) |
