Let's Predict....

A book reviewer said,
"this is a surprising and delicious story that will lift you off your feet and whirl you away."
What an unusual way to describe a story! How can a story be delicious and whirl you away? What sort of story would be like that?
Take a look at the front cover, open it out to see the front and the back all at the same time. What is happening? What is the man wearing? Where could he be flying to? What type of stories have their characters flying?
Is the man drawn to look realistic or is there a fanciful, mythical quality about him? Look at the font chosen for the title and the blurb. What might that suggest about the time that the story is set or where it is set? Do the colours of the illustration give you any clues?
Why do you think the coat is significant?
Let's read and find out . . . .

Reading the story

Open the book to the end papers (These are the pages at the back of the front cover, the very first illustration you come to). Can you see the man walking along the road? How is the man drawn? His head down, suggests what about him?Look at the colours used by the illustrator, what mood do they create?
Turn to the next page ....
Here we see the man more closely. What does the picture communicate about his emotions and feelings? How has the illustrator drawn the man to make us think these things. How does your body look and move when it is sad, lonely, upset, anxious etc? Why might he be feeling this way? Notice in the first few pictures that the man is drawn a lot smaller than his surroundings. Can you guess why?
Read the story through from here, perhaps stopping as you go to discuss what's happening.
