Introduction

Dear Year 6,
When you go the Australian War Memorial in Canberra later this term, you will be overwhelmed by the strong sense of "story" that is embodied in this sacred place. Some of these stories are about courage and bravery, some of these stories are horrific, some are overwhelmingly sad and some reflect the wonderful spirit of mankind to show kindness and generosity to others. Many of the stories that you will hear have more than one of these elements (and others) in them but ALL of these stories are real. They are about real people like you and me that have given their lives for their country and they are real stories about people who have left behind parents, partners, children and friends.
When you visit the Australian War Memorial it is hard not to feel emotional and to become involved in the lives of these men and women who made such a great sacrifice for their country and fellow man. You will be touched by their experiences.
This term, before you go to Canberra, we are going to look at some picture books that also try to tell the stories of those who went to war. The picture book is the perfect medium to use for these stories because it allows the text to work with the illustrations to tell the story. Both help to recreate the feelings and emotions of the people involved and help us also to feel what others were feeling. The picture book can give us a great sense of what it was really like and prepare us for War Memorial in our nation's capital.
So begin this journey by selecting the first book, Lone Pine, under the Year 6 Term 1 tab at the top of this page.
